Which Salesforce edition supports API access?

API access requires Professional edition or above. Essential (the cheapest plan) does not include API access. Enterprise and above are recommended for full attribution data.

Do I need to be a Salesforce admin?

You need a user profile with "API Enabled" permission. Standard admins have this by default — ask your Salesforce admin to enable it if you're not seeing the option.
